Polo Under the Palms, Held at Sarasota Polo Club, Lakewood Ranch to Benefit Cancer Research at The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center
LAKEWOOD RANCH, FLA March 24, 2013
The annual Polo Under the Palms was held at the Sarasota Polo Club at Lakewood Ranch to benefit cancer research at The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center Saturday, March 23rd.
In their effort to support and promote “The Sport of Kings” Crooked Brook encourages families and people of all ages to attend and participate in polo events.
“Polo events are fun and a great activity for families and people of all ages.” said Donna Jones, senior design assistant at Crooked Brook where they specialize in custom polo jerseys.
Funds were raised through sponsorships, a polo competition, silent auction and a post-game soiree according to Christie Uihlein who is co-chair of the event with her husband James P. Uihlein (a member of one of the polo teams) which raised about $150,000 last year.
"Of course we'd like to hit that again this year" Christie said.
The annual event was started by The Uihlein family three years after Christie Uihlein’s father-in-law Jamie Uihlein was diagnosed with stage II tongue cancer in 2004. He sought a second opinion at MD Anderson, where he received treatment and he is currently cancer-free.
Lakewood Ranch is an unincorporated master planned community in southeastern Manatee County, Florida, United States, built on part of what was once a timber ranch owned by members of Milwaukee's Uihlein family.
The theme Polo under the Palms was inspired by a similar MD Anderson event in Texas, Polo on the Prairie.
"We are all here for the charity," said Nick Drizos a season ticket holder of Lakewood Ranch. "Today is all about the cure of cancer." "We love the sport and it's just a great cause for MD."
