The Sir Winston Churchill Cup off to a great start. The first matches of the prestigious cup were held at Al Habtoor Polo Resort and Club on December 4th. This is the first time this international cup is held in the UAE, with support from The International Churchill Society. Six international teams have entered the 10 goal tournament: Bin Drai Polo, Bangash Polo, UAE Polo, Habtoor Polo, Mahra Polo and Kuwait Polo.
In the first match of the tournament H.H. Sheikha Maitha Bint Mohammed Al Maktoum’s team UAE saw the Bin Drai Polo team in an exciting match. Bin Drai was ready from the start and scored goals one after the other being ahead with 7-2 by half time. UAE needed a bit of extra warm up time, but in the 3rd chukker made a comeback and shortened the gap to 7-5, the final chukker was tough with a lot of defence from both teams and only 1 goal by Bin Drai for a final score of 8-5 to Bin Drai.
The second match was between Mahra and Kuwait polo. Mahra was already fired up from being in the final of the UAE National Day Cup and opened up the scoreboard only a few minutes in to the match. They were heavy on the defence, not letting Kuwait score a single goal until the last chukker and themselves scoring 9 goals. The final score was Mahra 9 vs Kuwait 1.
Today the games will continue with the first match between UAE and Bangash Polo at 2:30 pm and the second between Kuwait and Habtoor Polo at 3:30 pm
